How Long do you Practice Guitar Each Day?

My son thinks I practice 3 hours a day. That might be closer to the truth. Let’s take a look at it.

  1. 10 minutes. Practice chord shapes in early AM and before sleep.
  2. 90 – 120 minutes. Serious practice time using Justin Guitar course, Old Town School of Folk Music Lessons, or Lauren Bateman advice.
  3. 15 minutes. Reading about guitars.

I think I spend a solid 2 hours a day practicing. My son thinks its closer to 3 hours. I guess the important point is to practice well and to not learn bad habits.

Does blogging count as practice? No, it doesn’t.

But I work on my blog 30-60 minutes a day.

Altogether I spend about 3+ hours working on guitar related tasks every day. Good thing I’m retired.

Thanks to my Wife for Letting me “Play with Guitars”

Special thanks to my wife and son for putting up with music from the basement. I play silently on electric guitar with headphones when my son wants some peace and quiet. During the day, I play acoustic because my wife doesn’t mind.

Again, thanks to my wife and son for allowing me my guitar fascinations.

Two Final Quotes from Dave Simpson, a Great Guitarist on YouTube

Here’s one Dave Simpson quote:

Practice is a Joy – Dave Simpson

If practicing guitar or bass isn’t a joy for you, why are you doing it? And perhaps, maybe you are practicing in the wrong way. Think about it.

Here’s a second quote from Dave Simpson.

If you want to get good at playing guitar, put in the years. – Dave Simpson

I know I will never be a Dave Simpson on guitar. Dave’s been doing it since he was a teenager. I have been practicing guitar/bass since I was 72. I just can’t possibly become a great guitarist or bassist.

So why should I play guitar or bass?

My goal is to be a better guitarist or bassist today than I was yesterday. If I do that every day, I will become a decent guitarist or bassist. All I need is a little time 🙂
